Ch. Vikiro’s Not A Pull Toy CDX, OA

Actually agility is both an obstacle course and a playground to the Norwegian Elkhound. Training for agility is a time consuming endeavor, which can test the handler’s patience and resolve.

In the dog’s mind this may be either a playground in which to teach the handler humility or he can see it as a chance to bond with the handler while enjoying the excitement of the obstacle course.

Training begins by introducing the dogs to equipment gradually and at lowest heights. As the dog’s confidence builds, increased obstacle height and difficulty are added. Beginning dogs are taught to walk over PVC poles on the floors or walk through the rungs of a ladder to become aware of where their feet are. They walk on planks on the floor. Tunnels are shortened and dogs are coaxed through them. Dogs are taught an individual obstacle and the skills necessary to negotiate that obstacle before they are introduced to a new obstacle. When the dog has learned to safely negotiate the obstacles, sequencing is introduced with short patterns eventually turning into full courses.
